Yes the patterns repeat, and this patterns are gel phase forms Of the dots. The dots are likely Q-dots of a more exotic nature or something very sililar. More fancy and capable than a standard Q-dot for simple biosensing or whatever. I haven't found any as clever as this in literature yet, but I'm sure they just bonded several separate ideas into one package.
